Lauwersmeer has changed from a salt marsh area into a freshwater area, a very particular development which has resulted in a magnificent scenic area.

The watery area with the Wadden Sea coast in the north is characterised by open water and extensiveness with breathtaking panoramic views and various species of birds in the air. Then there are the wooded areas and waving reed lands. The Waddenland plant life can be referred to as special: rare plants such as Parnassia and orchids show themselves in all their colours.
