Hundred years of collecting in the Groningen Museum

From 30 May through 5 September, the Groningen Museum will present the ‘Nu in het oude Groninger Museum! 100 jaar verzamelen 1894-1994’ (Now in the old Groningen Museum! One hundred years of collecting 1894-1994) exhibition. The Groningen Museum will be closed from 12 April through 18 December in order to carry out renovations, so the exhibition will be on display in the old Groningen Museum at the Praediniussingel.

The old museum was constructed in 1894 and served as the Groningen Museum until 1994. The exhibition features a selection of items from the collection the museum built up over one hundred years: there will be work by De Ploeg artists’ collective and 17th and 18th century painting and applied art from Groningen. In addition to a number of top pieces, there will be work which in recent years has been on display in the current museum. In the basement, the Natuurmuseum (Museum of Natural History), which after 1994 was located in the museum at the Praediniussingel, will be remembered under the theme of ‘animals in art’.

In September, the exhibition will make room for the Hanzehogeschool Groningen, which will make a start with preparations to accommodate its Academie voor Beeldende Kunst, Vormgeving en Popcultuur (Academy for Visual Art, Design and Pop Culture) in the historic museum building at the Praediniussingel. The museum will be open from 10 am until 5 pm from Tuesday through Sunday and holidays, and until 10 am on Friday. The museum is closed on Monday, 25 December and 1 January.
