Groningen is active, particularly in spring and summer. Inline skating tours, hikes, bicycle rides and Windmeeritten (Wind at your Back Tours) take place on a regular basis, allowing Groningen residents and other sports enthusiasts to exercise and simultaneously enjoy the beautiful city.
Friday Fun Skate
Each Friday evening at about 8 pm, inline skate and skeeler lovers participate in the weekly Friday Fun Skate in the Noorderplantsoen park, which takes in other stretches of the city and surrounding area every week. Anyone who can make turns and brake can join in. The pace is not very intensive and there are regular breaks. Everyone is advised to wear proper protection and to bring light in case the tour ends in the dark.
Wind at your Back Tours
Set out on one of the Windmeeritten (Wind at your Back Tours) and fly through the province carried by the wind. The destination of the bicycle rides is determined by the wind direction and after a magnificent experience, simply get on the bus to return home and avoid the heavy journey back with a head wind.
Excursions take place on 23 May, 13 and 27 June, 11 and 25 July, and 8 and 22 August.
A Rondje Stad (City Tour) is a wonderful alternative for those who are more interested in the city of Groningen than its environs. Between May and October, guided tours will be held each Friday afternoon (3 pm) and Saturday morning (10.30 am). Guides will show their group of cyclists all of the famous hotspots and some less well-known, but certainly no less pretty, spots in the city, and are happy to share their knowledge about them. A guided tour costs €15.00 per person (bicycle hire included). By reservation only. Tours take about 2.5 hours. Departures from the bicycle lock-up near Pathé Cinemas at the Gedempte Zuiderdiep.
Tourist Information Office walk
Every Saturday afternoon, the Tourist Information Office holds a fascinating guided walk through the city. While enjoying wonderful stories, the walk takes in the very best spots in Groningen. Walks start at 1 pm at the VVV (Tourist Information Office) at the Grote Markt, where they also end about 1.5 hours later. The guided tour costs € 4.00. Reservations are recommended; call 0031 50 313 97 40, send an e-mail to email@example.com or stop by the Tourist Information Office.
